How did we come up with the idea of the sabbatical?

We have heard this question more often than we have spoken to a few friends and colleagues recently. The idea has been in the room ever since we met. Until now, however, it was treated more as an idea for the future and we didn't talk much about it. Then, about 1.5 years ago, the idea came up that we would like to visit South America one day. Because of the distance and the size of the continent, we didn't want to just fly there for 3 weeks and tick off the list of main attractions and travel back like typical tourists. Besides, long-haul flights are a horror anyway in terms of sustainability. So it went back and forth between us and it started with 3 months in South America. Then 3 months turned into 6 months, because the continent is simply huge. 6 months then became 6 - 9 with which we planned... Lucky coincidences, that means conversations with friends from Australia and family from the USA, conversations with work colleagues about Southeast Asia and with acquaintances about South America then led to the fact that 6 - 9 months of South America has now become the provisional travel plan 🙂

1. Malaysia

A little Kuala Lumpur and then off into nature outside the capital to the tea plantations 🙂

2. Indonesia

Since the whole of Indonesia would already justify several months' stay, we had to decide. We definitely wanted to see orangutans. So either Borneo or Sumatra. Our decision fell on Sumatra because it is even more untouched.

3. Singapore

Since our onward flight to wherever is leaving from Singapore Airport anyway, as Singapore is the hub of many international flights, we have to make our way there anyway... So why not spend 2 nights there?

4. Australia

If we're already down there, we can't just fly past our friends. So there is a detour to Australia. Here we don't know yet how long we'll be travelling this continent. Everything is still open between 2 and 8 weeks.

5. USA

There is also a stopover in the USA for a flying visit for us 🙂 We would have to change planes in the USA anyway to fly to Colombia afterwards and therefore, since we can't just drive/fly here on the weekend to visit, a fixed stopover is planned here 🙂

6. Colombia

Colombia se está convirtiendo en un país muy importante para nosotros. Estamos aprendiendo español.
(Colombia is a very important country for us on the trip. We are learning Spanish here to get along in Latin America).

It is not yet clear how long we will stay in Colombia. Possibly for longer. Tatjana's friends have discussed a few sights with us that we should definitely see and ... oh man.... There is so much to see!

7 - ??. Latin America

Now that we've learned Spanish in Colombia and are almost locals, now it's on to the rest of the continent. Some of them are HUGE countries. The rest of the time we will travel this continent and see where the wind takes us. Nothing has to, everything can. The rough plan says we want to make our way to northern Argentina. The detailed plan? No idea. That's a problem for future Tatjana and future Arthur. And who knows who we will meet on our journey! Maybe the rough plans will change too 😉 .

And what's the best part? Here on this website we will keep you up to date 🙂

??+1.... We'll talk about this when the time comes...

Here begins a new chapter in Artur and Tatjana's book... Here the world travel chapter ends. Once around the world. ... The first time? 😉
